I’m learning to sail a 420 dinghy sail boat what is the correct way to helm?

My instructors tell me to hold the tiller in front of me “like a microphone” but my dad (who has 40 years sailing experience) tells me to hold it behind my back with the hand closest to the stern (back of the boat) The way my farther tells me seems much easier. Are both ways okay?
