What is the best way to learn German while on an exchange?

I’ve been on an exchange in Germany for a month now, but I feel like my German hasn’t improved a lot. I attend school – everything is in German but I don’t understand very much. What are some ways to learn faster and more effectively? Anything I should be doing while listening in class? Outside of the classroom?
